Past Commander

Lt Col. Robert W. Shaw
Lt Col. Shaw joined Civil Air Patrol soon after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. He was appointed by the New Hampshire Wing Commander as the Commander of the Hawk Composite Squadron in June of 2011. In addition to this responsibility, Lt Col Shaw also holds several other high level positions within the New Hampshire Wing. Currently he is also the NH Wing Chief of Staff, Director of Cadet Programs and Deputy Director of Emergency Services.
Within the NH Wing Emergency Services mission, Lt Col. Shaw is a member of the Unified Command IC Team and is qualified as a Level 1 Incident Commander. He is also qualified as an Operations Section Chief, Planning Section Chief, Finance Section Chief, Agency Liason, Air Operations Branch Director and a Ground Operations Branch Director.
Lt Col. Shaw has recieved 10 Commander's Commendations, has been named the John V. "Jack" Sorenson Cadet Programs Officer of the Year for the Northeast Region in 2010, as well has received many other staff member awards. He holds a Master Rating in Cadet Programs, Emergency Services, Personnel, Administartion, a Senior Rating in Plans and Programs and a Technician Rating in Aerospace Education. Most recently, Lt Col Shaw was awarded 4 Presidential Declared Disaster Relief Ribbons for his service during the recent tornadoes in Massachusetts, Hurricane Irene and most recentyly Hurricane Sandy. Lt Col Shaw was awarded the 2012 NH Wing Squadron Commander of the Year Award.
Lt Col Shaw has been the New Hampshire/Vermont Wing Encampment Commander in 2010, 2011 and 2012. He has also commanded Search & Rescue School in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and attended the Hawk Mountain Ranger School in 2005 as a Ranger 1st Class.
In his professional career, Lt Col. Shaw holds a Master's Degree in Business Administration, Pharmaceutical Marketing and a Bachelor's Degree in Plastics Engineering. He is currently the President of Shaw Intercontinental Corp., an international plastic, metals design and engineering firm.

Deputy Commander for Cadets

Capt. Dana E. Hylen
Bio: Capt. Dana E. Hylen originally joined Civil Air Patrol as a cadet with the Brockton Cadet Squadron in Brockton, MA in 1989. After attaining his Gen. Billy Mitchell Award in CAP, he attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL. There he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Aeronautical Science with a minor in Aviation Weather as well as a Commercial Pilot’s license with an instrument rating. In his professional career, Capt Hylen has also studied Emergency Medicine, earning his rating as a Nationally Registered EMT-Basic, and Criminal Justice as both a police officer and a college campus safety officer.
In his Civil Air Patrol cadet career, he attended the Northeast Region Encampment (1989), was the Massachusetts Wing Brewer Award nominee and competed at the region level with the Massachusetts Wing Drill Team at the National Cadet Competition. He also served as a member of both Color Guard and Honor Guard teams. As a special activity, he attended the U.S. Space Academy twice (Level 1 & 2). He later received the Col Louisa Spruance Morse Civil Air Patrol scholarship for his cadet accomplishments towards attending Embry-Riddle.
As a senior member, Capt. Hylen has served as the Squadron Leadership Officer and the Testing Officer at the Concord Composite Squadron in NH, where he was a member for 2 years. Here at the Hawk Composite Squadron, Capt. Hylen has served as the Deputy Commander for Seniors, the Personnel Officer, Professional Development Officer, Asst. Aerospace Education Officer, Asst. Administrative Officer and Asst. Testing officer. He is also the NH Wing Director of Personnel and Director of Professional Development as well as being trained as a Civil Air Patrol Mission Staff Assistant, Mission Scanner and Mission Observer.
